Plan your Book Launch: A guide to connect with your readers

Are you a seasoned writer by experience or a newbie rolling out his first book?

It doesn't matter which category you fall in because one thing none of the writers can overlook is the importance of a good book launch. You must be wondering why to even have a book launch in the first place? A good book launch can drive up interest in your book and it's sales immensely. Many new authors are so busy trying to meet the deadline of their first book that they don't plan for a book launch at all. You have worked long and hard on this manuscript, and now when it is finally published, you must plan a perfect launch for it.

But how should you plan a successful book launch? Here are a few tips that can come in handy while organizing your book launch

1. Set a budget for the launch:

Setting a budget for yourself is a first and foremost thing. You don't need to shell out a lot of money to have a successful book launch, what you need is an effective and well-planned launch without being too costly. Once you have set a budget, divide it up into different factors like hiring a venue, food/drinks for guests, printed copy of books and promotions. Always have your budget plan handy while preparing for the launch and try to stick to it.

2. Hiring a venue:

The venue you choose for your event is super important. If possible, it should be relatively central. It should be easily accessible by public transit so that as many guests as possible can attend. The type of venue you choose depends upon you. Some of the options are:

a. A book store or a library- It is a fairly common choice among writers. A book store can help host the event and sell books on the day of the launch. A library is another good option, being surrounded by books create a perfect ambiance for a book launch. However, these places usually won't serve snacks/drinks, and that's something you need to take care of yourself.

b. A local bar or Cafe- This is an excellent option for a more casual and relaxed event. You can even strike up a deal with the bar/cafe in terms of foods and drinks and take care of it. But, on the flip side, you will be confined to their space, their rules, their timeline. This is a feasible option only if you aren't expecting or inviting a whole load of guests.

c. A private venue-A private venue is another good option, for it gives you a lot more privacy and freedom to host your event. It provides you the ease of organization and lets you control various dynamics of the game. Obviously, you may incur some extra costs with this type of venue. But if you aren't tight on a budget, this is an excellent option for you.

These are a few options and there is no compulsion for you to stick to them. You can always get creative while choosing space for your book launch. You can host it in your own house and decorate it as you see fit. And if it's a children's book, you can organize it somewhere like an amusement park where you can meet many kids. You can host the event at a theater studio for the perfect ambiance if you have written a play or a drama. You can choose a venue that matches your book's aspect- setting, character, or plot. For example, if your book is set in Mexico, you can hold the book launch in a Mexican restaurant. So you see how creative you can get with it. Right?

Finding the perfect venue can be daunting and this is where HighSpace steps in. HighSpace can help you find your ideal space by connecting you with hosts willing to rent out their space for various creative and productive uses.

3. Promote the event

This should be done weeks before the day of the launch. You must make a Facebook event for your book launch and add all your friends and family and ask them to share the event details further with their friends. Post the time and location of your start with a picture of the venue and your book on Instagram. You can even make an eye-catching video promoting your book and post it on YouTube to draw attention.

4. Prepare a speech and plan a reading

You don't need to have a lengthy statement prepared. You can make it short and quick to talk a little bit about you and your book's journey and you can thank people who supported you in your endeavor. Don't forget to thank your attendees in your speech. Also, have a small reading planned as well. All you need to do is pick a compelling section from your book and read it to the audience to entice them a little about the book and pique their curiosity to take away with them a copy. But be careful not to reveal too much.

5. Mingle with the audience

Take time to work the room. Interact with the audience personally and thank them for coming and ask what they thought about the book. Personal connections can go a long way in building readerships; therefore, don't overlook this aspect no matter how trivial it may seem.

6. Book Sales and Signing

One of the biggest mistakes authors make is to bring too few books at the launch. It's better to overestimate the size of the audience and have books left over rather than to run out of books at the biggest sales event. Try to sell plenty of books at the event. You can also offer the guests a one-time discount on the book. Make sure you personally sign all the copies and answer any questions by the audience. Keep a positive attitude throughout.

7. Sign a guest book

Ask everyone who attends the event to sign in with their name and email id. Not only as a record of who participated in the event, but it is also an easy way to send thank you notes and build a database for future events or book promotions.

8. Enjoy yourself

Last but not least, enjoy yourself to the fullest!! It can be tiring and overwhelming to organize a perfect launch, given the amount of hard work that goes into it. You mustn't forget that it's your night, so remember to relax and have fun.
